Israeli media consultancy firm Orenstein + Hoshen OH! organized a special event in Tel Aviv on November 6, 2018 to mark its first year of operations. The focus of the event was an address by whistleblower Edward Snowden, the former NSA officer who achieved worldwide fame for being responsible for the biggest leak of sensitive intelligence material in history. The event was attended by hundreds of guests including dozens of journalists from the Israeli and international media.
Snowden's revelations about the surveillance programs of the US and UK between 2013 and 2015 shocked intelligence agencies around the world and changed the way in which governments and intelligence agencies behave. From his secret hideout in Russia, Snowden spoke to an Israeli audience for the first time about a range of topics including the involvement of commercial companies in spying on people and the state of privacy for citizens of Israel and worldwide. Towards the end of the meeting, Snowden answered questions from the Israeli audience.
Former Mossad deputy chief Ram Ben-Barak responded to Snowden's address and attacked the whistleblower. He said, "When you look at Snowden, you can get confused and think he is an American patriot, fighting for human rights, and identify with him and with the liberal values that we want to be a part of. With all due respect, in my opinion, this is a long way from the reality. I don't know what Snowden's real motivations are. You cannot make amends for a crime through another crime." At the beginning of 2018, Ben-Barak joined the list of the Yesh Atid political party (headed by Yair Lapid) and he formerly serviced as Director General of the Ministry of Strategic Affairs and Intelligence.
OH!, which specializes in representing clients from the legal, high-tech and business sector, explained that the decision to host Snowden was connected to the firms areas of activity.
